Office Safety Tips for the Employer - Ergonomics

Updated: Jul 16, 2023

Before (or after) stepping into the office on Monday (or any day), read this!

As a (former) OSHA Compliance Officer, I conducted a number of inspections in office settings.

Yes, there are safety hazards in offices. Yes, they're covered by OSHA. Yes, even if you have less than 10 employees.

Keep this in mind as you embark on your next productive work week.

Ergonomics - This is the area where office employees spend most of their time - at their desk/computer workstation.

An improper setup, over time, can lead to soft tissue injury and musculoskeletal disorders. Heard of carpal tunnel syndrome, among others?

The Tip(s):

* Ensure that workstations are safe and comfortable for your employees

* Evaluate or require employees to self-evaluate their workstations, using the checklist below, to identify problems

* Follow up on the self-evaluations and take corrective action by developing and implementing a plan for improvement

* This ergonomic process should be ongoing and incorporated into your company’s safety and health program

* Don’t forget to train your employees on ergonomic hazards, benefits, and reporting symptoms early

OSHA Insider Tip:

Though there are not industry-specific regulation for ergonomics in general office settings, you are still obligated to protect your employees from this hazard under the General Duty Clause. OSHA will accept employee complaints, injury reports and will conduct inspections under the correct circumstances.

Inspections interrupt your business operations and can lead to citations and penalties.

Unsure of where to start or simply lacking the time to implement these strategies? That's where I come in.

I am ready to take the reins and guide you through the process, allowing you to focus on other important aspects of your business.
